For speed dating events, the service is connecting people who don't know each other. For Tech Crunch *attendees*, the service is being in a place where startups and investors are. For TC50 *presenting companies*, it's free. And the reason angels shouldn't charge to hear pitches is that *it's their job to hear pitches*. Why should I pay you for you to introduce me to ... yourself? Angels that do this will get the entrepreneurs that couldn't get the attention of the more active, free-to-pitch VCs. Entrepreneurs that pay to pitch are pitching to the angels that don't get the best startups. Everyone loses (the entrepreneurs, the investors, the economy) except the fee collectors. All good points.
