In the rare event that somebody else is trying to do this, here's some possibly useful info:

1. SMPlayer actually can be used for the same procedure, from the command line. You just need to find the mplayer executable that gets installed alongside the rest of the SMPlayer stuff, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\SMPlayer\mplayer

2. In the case of getting the .rm files from this these webcasts (a UC Berkeley CS class) http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978391 I had to remove the -playlist argument for it to work. Not sure what difference that made.

3. To reiterate, it does look kind of like the command failed even if it's working. The only way I found to verify was to go look at the directory with the output file and watch its filesize keep growing.

Sharma,
Sigh. I guess that's what I get for not reading directions. Well, my method still works generally for non-OCW streams. Thanks for the tip!

Actually, you have the option of saving OCW videos to your hard disk: http://mit-ocw-thai.eng.chula.ac.th/OcwWeb/Global/OCWHelp/help.htm#26
