Peter you got the perfect way of looking at it.
although staying up all night is not healthy, But I saw that movie and your right. I consider myself an arnold at the gym. I stick to what works and my motivation is my own.
I am an artist as well, but consider that side of me to be like Lou. I have the talent and drive, but i need the pushing. I'm a graphic designer, so I do love what I do. I just procrastinate, or stop unfinished works and who knows when I'll return. I gotta read that book. I thuroughly enjoed your article

John - That gene is the one that caused people to whine incessantly when Microsoft would use their money and market position to crush competitors. It tends to make you complain about users too, for choosing the best marketed product because they're too dumb to find the best one.

If you truly believe that your product is better, then you have a duty to your current and potential customers to win so that they can be better served by you instead of your inferior competitors. Aren't they exploiting their customers by giving them an inferior product? They're lying to their customers and stealing potential value from them, so why go easy on them?

Since when is having a moral compass a "horrible gene that geeks have"? Exploiting others (whether because of your PERCEIVED weakness in their product or not) is completely screwed up. You might as well be a theif, and probably alredy are a liar.
